Most people who know me know that I am fascinated by the mind and that after several major life experiences, my calling was to study psychology. There’s something about the the brain and how it works that just blows my mind. How do we feel what we feel? Why do people feel things differently? What causes people to do bad things? How can we help others who may be suffering? Why are those people suffering Parts of the answers to those difficult questions lie in neuropsychology. Synapses, the connections neurons make within our minds has an effect how we feel and process things.
I wanted to make a piece that mixes art, the mind, and psychology. Using very simply supplies, this is what I came up with.
Any kind of fluid ink, some mixed media or watercolor paper, and a straw (yes a regular drinking straw) is all you need to create your own “synapses.” As you drip the ink and push it around by blowing through the straw, it’s hard to not see how this represents those precious neurological connections in our minds that allow us to connect with each other.
Each connection is unique and vibrant, much like our own personal connections with each other. Those connections bleed into others and the pattern continues on and on.
Art can reflect science and we can illustrate within new parameters if we reach down and tap into things we love. This piece is a marriage of my love of the mind and art. It is, to me, the perfect illustration of my connections within my brain and with those around me.
